Save Money on Free Antivirus Software: Microsoft Security Essentials
Soon my free McAfee protection via AOL will expire and I am starting to look for more free security software alternatives. In their quest to make Windows a safer environment, today Microsoft released a beta version of a free antivirus tool, Microsoft Security Essentials, which is now available for download.
- FREE
- fights viruses, spyware malware, and rootkits
- available for XP and Vista (the Vista version will also work with Windows 7)
- set it and forget it
- does an automatic weekly scan unless you manually override this feature
- uses fewer system resources than Microsoft Live OneCare and has a smaller footprint than bigger security system suites like McAfee or Symantec
- Available only to customers in the United States, Israel (English only), People’s Republic of China (Simplified Chinese only) and Brazil (Brazilian Portuguese only).
What it is not:
- No firewall
- No identity protection
- No antiphishing and antispam technology
- Doesn’t do performance tune-ups
- does not back up your PC data
I’ll wait for a bit to try it, but it’s on my list for when my free McAfee expires. I also have security protection included with my internet security provider.
