Save Money on Family Fun with Free Fireworks

Posted on July 4th, 2009.

fireworksThe town in which I live has a large outdoor concert venue.  I’m lucky, because every year, they have Independence Day fireworks, which are probably the best and biggest display in the entire bay area.  This year, Radio Disney Presents The 23rd Annual 4TH OF JULY FIREWORKS SPECTACULAR with The San Francisco Symphony, which will play many selections including Disney songs, music from “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “The Planets” and “Star Trek.”   During the Star Trek retrospective, actor George Takei, a cast member (Sulu) of the original television series , will be guest narrator.

I am excited about going tonight. Fireworks and a San Francisco symphony concert remind me of when I used to live in Boston and would go to the free fireworks at the Hatch Shell on the Esplanade along the Charles River synchronized with the Boston Pops.

I’m going with a friend and meeting up there with more friends who will save us a green patch on the lawn.  We plan to either walk the 3 miles or park far enough away so that we don’t have to pay for the $10 for parking. That way, the friend I am taking and I will also get in a nice walk.

By reading the free weekly town paper that gets delivered to my doorstep, I found a coupon for 4 free lawn tickets to the event for town residents. Last year the town only offered two tickets per household. All I had to do was be one of the first 1000 people to clip the coupon and bring it to the ampitheater box office and show my drivers license and one additional proof of residency (e.g., a utility bill). Additional tickets were available for purchase.

Many cities offer a free fireworks show to celebrate the 4th of July.  Make it even more enjoyable by packing snacks and drinks to enjoy during the show while sitting on a picnic blanket. Take advantage of the festivities. You’ll save money and be entertained on a grand scale.

Happy 4th of July everyone!
